“Often the difference between getting ignored or noticed by prospective clients is subtle eye catching details, polish, or unexpected techniques. In this workshop we will examine enhancements you may not be currently using in your work. We will explore the following concepts with visual examples and explanations:

-Becoming comfortable staying loose in your drawing longer than you want.

-Working longer on your illustrations than you are used to polish edges and details.

-Understanding how straits and curves compliment each other in your designs.

-Conserving your strongest value relationships to give punch to your focal points(s).

-Using color to provide maximum storytelling and clarity to your stories.”

MARIA T. MIDDLETON is the Art Director of Imprints at Candlewick Press and Walker Books US. After beginning her career at HarperCollins Children’s Books, Maria spent more than a decade designing award-winning books for Abrams Books and then for Random House Children’s Books. In her current role, Maria works across a variety of formats and genres including board books, picture books, middle-grade, young adult, graphic novels, and non-fiction. Most notable are Queen of the Sea by Dylan Myconis, Malamander by Thomas Taylor, illustrated by Tom Booth, and This  Boy by Lauren Myracle. Maria is drawn to out-of-the-box thinking, hand-lettered typography, and quirky but lovable characters. She’s a southerner at heart, a New Yorker by choice, a fan of serial commas, strong coffee, and the color red. You can find her at and follow her on Instagram and Twitter @mariatmiddleton.

“Wow your next art director with a beautifully crafted digital portfolio that showcases the breadth and depth of your talent! This workshop will cover how to craft, edit, and organize your best work in a suitable online platform; creating a cohesive catalog of images that includes more than one style, plus personal and professional work; the dos and don’ts of portfolio basics; and what an art director looks for when viewing potential work.”

Nov 9th: Illustrations due for the critiques. Submit finished sketches for first critique. You want the sketch to be resolved, perhaps even color already added to it, so that there is something that can be critiqued.
