About Debbie

Debbie Yasaki has been a member of SCBWI since 2010 and joined the Hawaii region last summer after moving from Japan. She lived on Oahu in the mid-90s (pre H-3) as a newlywed and her husband’s military career has brought them full circle, like a good story. She lives in Da Pidgin Guerilla’s suburb where her past-picture-book-age kids attend Aiea High School.

She began as a picture book writer and migrated to Middle Grade. In 2015, her MG manuscript won Third Place in Willamette Writers’ Kay Snow YA and Middle Grade Fiction Competition – Roland Smith Award; Honorable Mention in the League of Utah Writers’ Creative Writing Contest, First Chapter—YA Category; Finalist in Pacific Northwest Writers Association’s Literary Contest, MG Category;  and Honorable Mention (Novel) in RateYourStory’s Writing Contest.

But, knowing that many successful authors have a completed, shelved novel on their hard drives, she decided to jump on the bandwagon.

Debbie has rededicated herself to picture books and studies humor, as laughter is the best way to deal with life and a mid-life crisis.

It was that or dye her hair blue.

But Daughter outlawed that option because “it’s like so embarrassing, mom.”
