The Give and Take of Critiques

Online Hui with in-coming Regional Advisor, Akiko White, Cakelustrator

Zoom Online Meeting link will be sent to registered attendees the day before the event (June 26th).
Please RSVP no later than June 26, 3pm.

Many of you have expressed an interest in joining a critique group. This Hui will highlight tips on how to give and take constructive criticism for each other’s work. We will talk about how to respect each other’s manuscripts/art while giving feed back that may be helpful for the writer or illustrator. We will also address how not to become defensive when receiving feedback on your story/art and how too keep the momentum going in a critique group.

About Akiko

When I was only four years old my mother introduced me to painting and my grandmother shared her baking secrets with me. This inspired me to create the kind of art I make today. I received a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the McNay Art Institute and have worked as a professional illustrator and graphic designer. I have also taught digital and traditional illustration as an adjunct professor.

In 2014, I won The Tomie dePaola award through the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. In 2015, I won best in show at That Takes the Cake Show in Austin, Texas. In 2016, I participated on Food Network’s Cake Wars with the Best Designed Cake in Cake Wars History!

As the next Regional Advisor for SCBWI Hawaii, I would like for our chapter to become a great community of friends who support each other in our journey to publication and beyond. I would like to connect our authors and illustrators with local booksellers, Publishers, librarians and teachers. My hope is that by creating a strong community of like-minded people we will all have success in the children’s book world.

I’m looking forward to meeting all of you and working together to make our SCBWI Hawaii chapter a great community!
