Have you thought about writing a picture book biography but not quite sure where to begin? How do you pick a theme to focus on, how to cite references? If this is you, join us with Vivian Kirkfield, author of Sweet Dreams, Sarah and Making Their Voices Heard: The Inspiring Friendship of Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe, to learn best practices for writing nonfiction picture book biographies. Vivian is joined with her editor Courtney Fahy of Little Bee Books. After the presentation Vivian will also  share predetermined answers to some burning questions about nonfiction PB’s that we had for editor Ann Rider of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

The Zoom link will be sent to attendees and there will be access to the recording.

About Vivian Kirkfield

Writer for children–reader forever…that’s Vivian Kirkfield in five words. Her bucket list contains many more than five words – but she’s already checked off skydiving, parasailing, banana-boat riding, and visiting kid-lit friends all around the world. When she isn’t looking for ways to fall from the sky or sink under the water, she can be found writing picture books in the quaint village of Amherst, NH where the old stone library is her favorite hangout and her young grandson is her favorite board game partner. A retired kindergarten teacher with a masters in Early Childhood Education, Vivian inspires budding writers during classroom visits and shares insights with aspiring authors at conferences and on her blog, Picture Books Help Kids Soar where she hosts the #50PreciousWords International Writing Contest. She is the author of Pippa’s Passover Plate (Holiday House); Four Otters Toboggan: An Animal Counting Book (Pomegranate); Sweet Dreams, Sarah (Creston Books); Making Their Voices Heard: The Inspiring Friendship of Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe (Little Bee Books, January, 2021); and From Here to There: Inventions That Changed the Way the World Moves (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Fall 2020). You can connect with her on her website, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Linkedin, or just about any place people with picture books are found

About Courtney Fehy

Reading has always been more than just a hobby for me. It’s been a way to experience other walks of life, to make new friends, have those friends become family, and to even experience the impossible. Each story has a way of becoming a part of the reader and opening their eyes to worlds and feelings unknown, and I have always wanted to help others experience this amazing magic. Thus began my love of publishing, a magical realm of its own, where incredibly dedicated and devoted people who love stories and storytelling come together to make magic.

Ann Rider

Executive editor for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
